FSC in dialog: Corruption, social unrest and good governance in India
May 28, 2013
The topic "Corruption, social unrest and good governance in India" was presented and discussed by Anand Kumar from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems of the Jawaharlal Nehru University on May 28.
Corruption represents one of the biggest governance challenges in India today. The declining capacity of the Indian state and its institutions is a major indicator of a "governance deficit", compounded by growth in corruption among state functionaries. This has led to massive non-violent social protests in 2011-12, culminating into a political alternative that attempts to overturn politics from above by a mobilization of people from below.
This talk focused on the issue of corruption, social unrest and the crisis of governance in contemporary India. It presented a narrative on the relationship patterns between poverty, people and the state, and outlined the main challenges and prospects of anti-corruption struggles and demands for good governance.
