Short-term scholarships for PhD students

FSC awards top selected applicants from developing countries (see OECD DAC list)  scholarships to conduct a part of their doctoral research for three months at the University of Hohenheim, Germany.

The scholarship includes

1.Award for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany
2.The monthly grant is EUR 1,000
3.In addition, FSC pays for traveling to and from Hohenheim
4.Proofed costs for a health and liability insurance will be refunded for an amount up to EUR 100
5.Successful applicants can select from the regular course catalogues of the international MSc and PhD study programs offered by the University of Hohenheim (also including the courses offered in the PhD Program "Global Food Security").
Please note: Other costs must be paid by the successful applicant.

For research collaboration, each successful applicant will work with the research staff of the relevant institute of the University of Hohenheim to conduct a specific research project contributing to the mission of FSC and relevant for her/his PhD thesis. Funding for research is expected to be provided by the applicant’s and/or supervisor’s institute and/or other organizations.

The objective of the research collaboration is

1.To write at least one joint, peer-reviewed journal publication or paper
2.To present this publication/paper at an international conference that contributes to FSC's mission and that is relevant to the PhD thesis

 Successful applicants are expected

1.To present their research proposal, state of research and preliminary results in FSC's interdisciplinary seminars and at relevant department's PhD seminars
2.To participate in teaching and training activities on a limited scale, if possible
3.To establish an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported researchers and their home institutes as well as FSC through an interactive alumni-network

The scholarships start from November to December 2017 depending on the preference of the supervisors. Please refer to the research topics section to see the exact date in written the provided PDFs. 

The applicant must provide proof of

1.Outstanding study performance in agricultural, nutritional, natural, social, economic or political sciences, or related disciplines with specification on food security related issues with a minimum MSc grade of 2.5
2.Working on doctoral studies at her/his home institute by the time of application and by the time the scholarship program commences
3.Latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship
4.Track record of knowledge in the proposed field of study
5.Plan to return to his/her home country or country of residence and institute
6.Excellent proficiency in oral and written English (more info)

Futhermore, the applicant must

1.Be currently enrolled in a doctoral program
2.Be able to conduct innovative research
3.Have excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit
4.Be able and willing to work well in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment with individuals from different scientific, societal and cultural backgrounds and with organizations from the public, private and civil society sector
5.Be available for the entire period of the research stay of 3 months
6.Be a national of developing country according to OECD DAC List

Successful applicants will receive a scholarship for conducting PhD thesis-related research and hence adding value to the PhD thesis and contributing to the mission of FSC.

The scholarship includes

1.Award for a stay at a partner institute, research center, or development organization located in a developing country
2.The monthly grant is EUR 500
3.In addition, FSC pays for traveling to and from the partner institute
4.Proofed costs for a health and liability insurance will be refunded for an amount up to EUR 100
Please note: Other costs must be paid by the successful applicant.

For research collaboration, each successful candidate will work with the research staff of one of FSC’s partner universities or another research center or development organization located in a developing country (e.g., one of the centers of the CGIAR) to conduct a specific research project contributing to the mission of FSC and relevant to her/his PhD thesis. Interregional South-South collaborations (e.g., from Africa to Latin America, or from Latin America to Asia) are encouraged in particular. Funding for research is expected to be provided by the applicant’s and/or supervisor’s institute and/or other organizations.

2.To present this publication/paper at an international conference that contributes to FSC's mission and that is relevant to the PhD thesis
