Dies Academicus and Open University

July 6, 2013

To the Dies Academicus and the Open University on July 6 and 7 Food Security Center contributed with an exotic looking coffee bar selling delicious coffee and self-made cakes, a small exhibition and a bandolino.
The year 2013 was the International UN Year of Water Cooperation. Within this context, the FSC made a small exhibition about the “Virtual Water” in our daily food. The virtual-water content of a product is the volume of freshwater used to produce it, measured at the place where it was actually produced. It refers to the sum of water use in the various steps of the production chain (www.waterfootprint.org). As an example, it needs 2389 liters of water to produce a single hamburger, and around 2100 liters for a Schnitzel of 250 g.
To visualize how much water is needed to produce a single cup of coffee – fifteen crates plus five extra liter bottles  were stacked at the coffee bar - adding up to 140 liters of water.
