Short course “Measurement of Human Welfare “at University Marta Abreu, Cuba

From February 4th - 7th, 2014, Manfred Zeller, Director of the Food Security Center (FSC) at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany, visited the Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas (Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas; UCLV) and especially its Faculty of Economic Sciences (Facultad de CienciasEconómicas; FCE).  

The FSC and FCE have an intense cooperation and the visit was dedicated to the Memorandum of Understanding of the Directorate of International Relations (Dirección de Relaciones Internacionales; DRI) signed by the above mentioned universities. 

Both institutions share the special interest to provide the scientific, technological and organisational bases for conducting a research project jointly titled “Survey of Food Security and Food Sovereignty in the Central Region of Cuba” (Medición de la Seguridad y Soberanía Alimentarias en la Región Central de Cuba).

As an agricultural economist, who graduated from the University of Bonn, Manfred Zeller employed extensive theoretical and applied research in the field of food security. Furthermore, Manfred Zeller serves as a reviewer for various scientific journals, amongst others: World Development, European Review of Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, and Economic Development and Cultural Change.On February 6th, 2014 Professor Dr. Zeller gave a lecture on the subject of “Global Food Security: Challenges to International Agribusiness and their Social Performance on the 35th Anniversary of FCE.
