Visit to a traditional „Besenwirtschaft“
The Besenwirtschaft has a long tradition in the Swabian region. It started around the year 800 with a decree from Karl the Great that allowed winegrowers to serve their wine in their own private households. The tradition has continued to this day with wine being served either in the winegrower´s living rooms or sometimes in rebuilt stables. The winegrowers place a broom (“Besen”) in front of their doors as a sign that their homes are now open for visitors.
To experience this tradition, a group of FSC scholars and staff visited a Besenwirtschaft in Uhlbach, a village outside Stuttgart, in the middle of vineyards on April 4th, 2014.
