FSC in Dialog: Beyond the Arab Awakening

April 18, 2013

On April 18, 2013, Clemens Breisinger from the Development Strategy and Governance Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington D.C. presented and discussed the topic: “Beyond the Arab Awakening: The role of food security for development” at the lecture series“ FSC in dialog” in Hohenheim.

When the revolution in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and other Arab countries started, “bread”, “dignity” and “social justice” were among the widely chanted slogans in Tahrir square and beyond. Two years on, the hope of rapid improvements in living standards and food security has given way to dissatisfaction of many people with the transition process. What has happened? The presentation will try to find answers to this and other questions and provide the latest updates on food security and development in the Arab world.
