FSC Summer School 

Food Security and the Post 2015-Agenda


Location and date

The Food Security Center (FSC) and the Institute of Biological Chemistry and Nutrition invited under-graduate and graduate students to attend the two-week FSC Summer School 2015 "Food Security and the Post 2015-Agenda" which took place from March 2 to March 13, 2015 in Stuttgart, Germany.

In the first week, the students participated in the 2nd International Congress Hidden Hunger “Hidden Hunger, Childhood Development and Long-term Prospects for Society and Economy” which took place at the Mövenpick Hotel Stuttgart Airport & Messe from March 3 to March 6, 2015.

On the first day (March 2, 2015) and in the second week, courses and seminars were held at the University of Hohenheim from March 9 to March 13, 2015.

Aim


The aim of the FSC Summer School 2015 was to impart a basic understanding of the complex interactions between essential nutrients and malnutrition as well as the critical worldwide problem of hidden hunger during the first 1000 days of human life (1000-day-window) and its consequences for society and economy. The course intended to enable participants to understand the basic functions of micronutrients and hidden hunger in humans as well as the links and gaps between science and reality in all parts of the world. The summer school provided an overview of strategies to prevent disease-related malnutrition and methods to improve food security. Furthermore, it was discussed how to contribute to the ambitious goals of the Post 2015-Agenda and how to integrate them into existing programmes.

Target group


The summer school target were undergraduate students in natural sciences (primarily, but not exclusively, nutritional, agricultural or biological sciences) at the Master of Science level, but was also open for Ph.D. students within approximately the first year of their post-graduate education. The course was open for international and national students.

Credits


Students of human nutrition at the University of Hohenheim will be able to chose the summer school as a an elective module (Wahlmodul).

Scholarships


There were 20 FSC/DAAD scholarships available for students from developing countries. Scholarships received the costs for airfare (economy class return ticket) to Stuttgart and were provided with a lump sum of € 1.000 to cover all costs related to the stay, including health insurance, food, public transportation and accommodation for the duration of the summer school.

The attendance of the FSC Summer School 2015 was free of charge (incl. congress participation).
