FSC in Dialog: Sustainable Food Futures

December 17, 2013

On December 17, Dr. Kate Millar from the Centre for Applied Bioethics of the University of Nottingham in the UK presented and discussed the topic: Sustainable Food Futures: the Role of Transgenic Animals in the Food Chain, at the lecture series “FSC in dialog” in Hohenheim.

Food products derived from genetically modified (GM) animals have not yet entered the European market, however it appears commercialisation of the products of GM animals, whether applied to agriculture or pharmaceutical production, is fast becoming a reality. Nonetheless, the ongoing discussions about GM crops, and the developing debate about the safety and ethics of foods and pharmaceutical products produced by both GM animals and plants, have provoked varying views across different sectors of society. This raises the question, what role could and should transgenic animals play in food security strategies?
