Food and Digits

October 19th, 2017 | University of Hohenheim

Poster World Food Day Colloquium 2017

Data is much more than simply information: in expert hands, it is intelligence (CGIAR, 2016). Worldwide, data can be quickly generated, analyzed and used. Big datasets from multiple disciplines offer undreamed-of possibilities to find new ways of ensuring food security through innovative data-driven solutions. Experts think that the wise use of data will be one of the most important tools for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The World Food Day Colloquium offered the platform to learn more about the digitalization with regard to global food security. The potential to innovate food security problems in developing countries is there but can big data and ICT revolutionize the fight against hunger and malnutrition? Consequences and impacts of digitalization on food security were presented by international FSC partners. Moreover, the possibilities that the digitalization offer have the potential to increase opportunities for higher education institutions. Scientists from different disciplines of the University of Hohenheim actively involved in big data approaches presented their perspectives. Additionally, young scientists gave insights on their research in developing countries contributing towards the UN SDGs, in particular to zero hunger (SDG 2). The Colloquium resulted in a panel discussion with experts on the question: Can digitalization feed the world?
